WHAT CAUSES A SMELLY DRAIN

A smelly drain is something every homeowner has to deal with at one time or another. In order to prevent smelly drains in the future, it’s important to understand what causes them in the first place.

The three main causes of a smelly drain are:

  • Sewer gas trap issues
  • Sewer line issues
  • Organic waste build-up

Let’s look at it in more detail.

SEWER GAS TRAP

The sewer gas trap is the section of the drain where water is stored. Its primary purpose is stopping gasses from rising up through the pipe and filtering into your home. The sewer gas trap is located at the section of the pipe that dips into a U-shape. Because of the angle, this is where the water sits.

Here’s where things may go wrong:

     1.     Water isn’t being stored adequately in the trap

This is usually caused by a leak. If you suspect there is a leak, call Drain & Madden and one of our expert plumbers will assist.

     2.     The sink &/or shower is not being used frequently enough

The best way to remedy this is by running water through any fixtures that aren’t being used frequently (spare bathrooms, etc.), to make sure that water that has evaporated is replaced.

SEWER LINE

If there’s a bad smell filtering through one or multiple drains throughout your home, this can indicate that the sewer line is blocked. This can also cause a gurgling sound to come from your pipes.

If this is the case, call Drain & Madden. Our trusted plumbers will assess your pipes and sewer line to ensure everything is running smoothly in no time.

ORGANIC WASTE BUILD-UP

Organic waste is something that accumulates over time. If not addressed early on, it can cause blocked drains, which in turn, can produce that nasty smell.

Common examples of organic waste include:

  • Food waste
  • Hair
  • Toothpaste
  • Soap
  • Grease

Sink strainers can be an effective preventative measure. However, if the damage is done and you’ve got a blocked drain, call our expert plumbers. Drain & Madden have the team and tools to ensure your pipes are cleared and flowing as they should.
